On 14 March 2015, the EU Council extended the sanctions regime in view of the situation in Ukraine by six months until 15 September 2015, amended the entries for fifty listed individuals, and deleted the entry for a deceased person. This follows a meeting of the EU Council on 13 March 2015 at which they agreed the extension of sanctions targeting “action against Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence” (see previous blog).
The new measures are brought into force by Council Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/427 implementing Council Regulation (EU) 269/2014 and Council Decision (CFSP) 2015/432 amending Council Decision 2014/145/CFSP.
Further, on 19 March 2015, the situation in Ukraine was discussed at a meeting of the European Council. The Council agreed that the duration of the restrictive measures against Russia, adopted on 31 July 2014 and expanded on 8 September 2014, “should be clearly linked to the complete implementation of the Minsk agreements”, and stated that “The European Council stands ready to take further measures if necessary”. It committed to taking the necessary decisions on this matter “in the coming months”.
