The US State Department has designated Al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and Specially Designated Global Terrorist, along with its leader Asim Umar. AQIS has claimed responsibility for several terrorist acts, including an attack on a Pakistan military dockyard in 2014 and the murder of numerous activists and writers in Bangladesh. The State Department’s press release is here.
3 people have also been delisted as SDGTs, all of whom were previously de-listed by the UN from its own terrorism sanctions (see previous blog). They are Ahmed Jim’ale, Ali Himmat, and Daki Mohamed.
