President Putin calls new N Korea sanctions into doubt

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has described imposing more sanctions on North Korea as “the road to nowhere”, casting doubt on the possibility of new UN sanctions being introduced against the country.  President Putin also objected to supporting US sanctions proposals on North Korea while Russia was itself still subject to US sanctions, saying that it was “ridiculous to put [Russia] on the same list as North Korea and then ask for our help in imposing sanctions on North Korea”. The US said on Monday that it would table a new UN sanctions resolution against North Korea.

The US has said that a sanctions package is being drafted for President Trump to consider, which would sanction anyone trading or doing business with North Korea (see previous blog). Russia has objected to such measures in the past.
