 Initial Imposition of EU Sanctions & Subsequent Amendments

EU sanctions have been imposed in relation to events in the Ukraine since March 2014 and take two forms: one set relate to threat to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country (see ‘Russia Sanctions’); and the other to the misappropriation of public property

The latter take the form of an asset freeze against those involved in misappropriating public assets as well as those responsible for human rights violations.

UN Sanctions

There are no UN sanctions in force against the Ukraine. EU sanctions are imposed pursuant to the EU’s autonomous Common Foreign and Security Policy powers.

Criteria for Inclusion in Targeted Measures

Categories of individuals and entities targeted by the restrictive measures are:

  • Those deemed responsible for the misappropriation of public property.
  • Those deemed responsible for human rights violations in the Ukraine.
